Chapter Five
Chains
âWhat are you doing here?â Fi questioned.
I should have felt bad about waking her up before the sun was up, but I didnât. âI need⦠girl talk?â I stated with hesitation because I was sure that was the wrong thing I needed, but the laughter that followed made Fi a little less angry about being woken up, and she welcomed me into her home for a cup of coffee and an education in her friend, Ellie.
âWhereâd you stash her?â I demanded. I had an idea of where she would be, but since Fiona helped her leave me, she had to answer for it.
âDidnât you get her note?â
âI havenât been home yet. I came straight here.â
âSheâs staying on the couch in Medicâs office.â
âWhy not in the guest room?â
âSomething about the rain, I donât know.â Fi was yawning as the words came stretching out.
âShe hates the rain. Storms, she loves, but the quiet rain gives her terrible anxiety. I once found her in the shower mumbling that she couldnât control the weather. I didnât ask her about it, I just picked her up and carried her to bed with me. She calmed down and slept all night on my chest without another worry.â
âYou saved her from herself,â Fi stood up and walked to get her cigarettes before coming back to sit at the table with me.
âWhyâd she leave? Did I do something?â I asked because for the entire week out on the road I had this horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that I had crossed one of her triggers without meaning to and I didnât want to lose her.
âItâs not you, per se,â she gave me a crooked fake smile. âItâs your penis. Scorpetto.â
Coffee came out of my mouth with a cough as I choked on the liquid and her words.
âThatâs for waking me up for something you are too blind to see,â Fi snapped as she got a paper towel to clean up my mess.
âI know you havenât seen one in a while, but they are called cocks when they belong to men, and his name is not Scorpetto, itâs Scorpio.â
âWhat you have is a tree stump, and my friend wants to sit on it.â
âStop bullshitting a bullshitter,â I demanded. It really was too early in the morning for the back-and-forth banter that weâd become accustomed to.
âOkay,â Fi sighed as she threw away the wet paper towels and sat down. âYou want to know what you did to make her leave?â
âPlease.â
âYou were you,â she replied, and then took out a cigarette and lit it.
âI donât understand.â
âIâm not sure you should peek behind the curtain, but Iâm gonna tell you, anyway. I had this whole plan to help her, to get her away from her husband before he killed her. I knew with a little money she could escape without him noticing money missing from his account. I knew the guys would dispose of the car and keep her hidden, and that if I sweet-talked Medic, he would
